Okay, so I have been blogging for several years now. And in all those years, I have gotten the pleasure of trying many different types and brands of protein powders. Some were better than others. Some were quite great, in fact.

But it wasn’t until I tried TastyWHEY by Adaptogen that I was taken aback.

There are a lot of protein powders that claim to be the best tasting. so when I saw that Adaptogen claims to taste like a milkshake, you can only imagine how much I believed it. (read: I took it with a grain of salt, not literally).

But then I tried it with almond milk… Wow. I was shocked. It REALLY did taste like a milkshake. I didn’t blend it or anything. Just the shaker bottle I was provided (which rocks by the way), almond milk, and the protein powder… and seriously delicious!

But, hey that might have been because of the almond milk. Making it creamier. So I wasn’t TOTALLY sold yet. Then I took some with me to work and had it with water.

By now we’ve all come across the list of benefits associated with a regular meditation practice. Meditation decrease blood pressure, lowers levels of anxiety, reduces insomnia, helps bring greater mental focus, increases our sense of well-being, helps us to relax, and increases our energy.

When I embarked on my meditation journey I started to experience that meditation is also one of the many ways that we can rewire our brain and condition our mind!

How it Works

Meditation disrupts our habitual mental and emotional patterns by concentrating our attention in a different way. Neuroplasticity allows us to change our neural pathways when we make changes to our behavior, environment, thinking, and emotions. In other words our brains are not fixed organs but capable of change given the right conditions.

Meditation also creates the opportunity for us to access the resources within us that we don’t normally connect to in our regular state of consciousness. These resources can then become the tools or strategies that we reach for when dealing with life’s challenges and difficulties.

Meditation has been described as a ‘stylized mental technique’, ‘an altered state of consciousness’, and a ‘self-regulation practice’ that teaches you to control where your attention goes.

Most of our thoughts and emotions are generated in our subconscious mind and only a tiny fraction of these come into our conscious awareness.  Since we cannot control the generation of our thoughts and emotions, our power lies in the ways in which we interact with, process, and condition them.

We can learn to develop the internal awareness to be able to direct where we consistently focus our attention. This is one of the most powerful ways to begin to gain emotional mastery and freedom.

Most of us think that the more time we spend exercising and working out, the fitter we will get. There are a few different individuals out there that seem to like spending hours doing cardio or in the gym doing repetitions and ab work but the rest of us do it to see results! We do it to keep fit and healthy and looking good!

While exercising for longer periods of time isn’t necessarily bad for us, the more time = more result myth has been busted! Recent studies have actually shown that shorter, but more intense workouts may actually be more affective and help you meet your goals faster. Whether that’s to lose the 5 pounds you gained over Christmas or to improve your 5km running time. Short bursts of high intensity interval training (HIIT) is great news for us as it means we can spend less time in the gym and more time enjoying life.

Ok so what exactly is a HIIT workout and why does it work?

Most of us very rarely reach our body’s maximum performance, as we don’t give ourselves the opportunity. But there are benefits of reaching your body’s maximum performance such as improved endurance and speed.

So what exactly does your body’s maximum performance mean? Basically it means to be pushing yourself as hard as you can for short periods of time. Most of us can work out for a long period of time at only half our maximum performance, but if we always did this then our bodies would never stimulated the same way as if we were at our maximum performance level. Even if we are at this maximum performance level for a much shorter period of time. HIIT workouts involve pushing your body to do a specific exercise as hard as you possible can but for a defined short period of time such as 1 or 2 minutes.

Experts, among them dr. Chapter 0: Going against the experts

So, in this article, as I will talk about how going gluten-free has changed my life and what it can do for you, I will go against expert recommendations. With all respect I have for people suffering from various stages of gluten intolerance, I believe this diet can be as much of a burden as it can be of an adventure. With this approach, I invite you on a short journey with me, where I reveal how my life changed since my partner and I waved gluten goodbye.

It is fair to say that our gluten-free diet happened by accident. We were barbecuing with a bunch of friends when they said they don’t eat grains. In the course of the discussion, out of curiosity and by no means expecting we can be gluten intolerant, my partner decided to go gluten-free. For a week, as a test. Especially that our friends couldn’t step telling us how great no grains is for them.

Chapter 1: Panic forded into adventure

Wait what? I am the chef in our home and from now on I am cooking with no grains? No flour? No pizza, no hamburgers, no pasta, no sandwiches, no cookies? WTF? I was – let’s call it a bit – panicky. What do we eat? It seemed not to be possible and the moment I made this realization, I was IN. I saw it as an adventure. As a challenge for my culinary skills. If the health benefits follow, so be it, but the challenge! I was over the moon all the sudden. And so I am several months in.

Chapter 2: How hard can it get?

The beginnings were so much easier than I thought. We just cut the bread, yet kept veggies (that we eat a lot of), meat, fish and fruit. I had a lot of fun cooking and we could say we felt better. Lighter. And, we also have noticed, that we celebrate our meals much more. Which came as a surprise as we love both, cooking and eating, and at that time didn’t expect any level ups coming soon.

Avoid ToxinsforMaximumHealth

Remember Dr. House?   He would diagnose people with obscure diseases, always at that last minute and often after almost killing them with an incorrect diagnosis. But, that aside, one of the things that he would have his team do is to go to people’s homes to investigate toxins that might be at the heart of the person’s problems. It turns out that there are toxins in our lives that might be causing all sorts of symptoms.   Sometimes, we may not even be aware that we are ailing, until we remove the toxin and suddenly feel better.

Unless we live completely off of the grid (and even then) we are all exposed to toxins and trying to avoid all of them would be the cause of much stress, which in itself is a major toxic load on our body. Instead, I try to talk to my clients and live my life with a philosophy of moderation and listening to self.   How much we really do know if we listen to our bodies and our intuitions?

Do you sometimes feel less than great?  Perhaps you are feeling tired, or itchy or cranky but you are not sure why.  It might be worth considering the possibility that it is something in your environment.  Listen to your body.   I am currently trying to figure out if my favorite couch might be emitting unhealthy toxins.  I have friends who are exploring whether alcohol is causing unhealthy reactions in their bodies.   I have known for years that I don’t like being in places where people are heavily perfumed, but it is only in recent years that I have considered that it might be the chemicals behind these scents and not the scents themselves that are causing the problem.

All of this leads me to marvel at the wonder of our bodies. They somehow know enough to tell us when there is a problem.  In addition, often they try to eradicate the toxins by getting rid of them.. I believe that many of us have gotten out of touch with listening to our bodies about toxins. This is made more complicated by the fact that chemicals in our foods and products are designed to make us enjoy them or want more, covering up the underlying chemical or toxin flavor, taste or odor.

Understanding toxins in our environment is difficult. The science is not clear and we often do not know what is actually toxic or the source of the toxin.  One of the reasons that I am so passionate about education about how to avoid the toxins in our environment is that often we don’t know that we are encountering them.  It’s easy to choose to walk away from the back of an idling truck because of all of the exhaust pouring out, but it is harder to know what lurks in our products, our foods, and our furniture.

It is possible, however, to make small, incremental changes to decrease the toxic load on our systems.  To do this, why not start by listening to your body?  Pay attention to when something bothers you and take steps to remove it from your life. It takes a bit of detective work and might require some false starts, but imagine how awesome it would be to have healthier skin, to feel better, and to have more energy all the while reducing toxins for yourself and your family.
