What’s your healthy snack plan?

An average American consumes up to 25 percent of their daily calories from snacks alone! We are becoming a nation of snacking and it’s something we can’t ignore. Is it good or bad? It all depends on how you deal with it.

Personally, I love to snack. I’m not a big meal person. That 25 percent is more like 50 percent for me. I’m busy a lot. I work a full time job and have a business AND the blog, and I usually don’t have the time set aside to cook.

I have my snacking dilemmas. I often feel a strong pull to snack when I’m working, especially when I feel like I’ve worked a lot and I’m mentally drained or bored. That’s when I want to snack. Getting more excitement back in my life and break through the ordinary of the to-do’s. It’s natural.

I typically crave sweets. I’m a HUGE sweets person. I love my pastries and chocolate… I could have it all the time. BUT being health-conscious I don’t do that. There are thankfully foods I eat that satisfy my cravings without sacrificing flavor.

I have a variety of favorite healthy snacks I usually reach towards. It usually depends on my mood and current craving.

Sometimes, if I want something more fresh and sweet, I opt for fruit, like an apple, grapes, or berries.

Sometimes, if I’m craving chocolate – I opt for chocolate flavored cereal or adding cocoa powder to greek yogurt with Stevia. I also really like eating a snack or protein bar that’s flavored chocolate.

Speaking of snack bars – I recently tried a new one by Skinnygirl. I had no idea they had snack bars but being me, I love trying new products so I loved trying these out.

Flavor wise, they have three varities: Chocolate Peanut Butter with Sea Salt, Dark Chocolate Pretzel, and Banana Oatmeal Dark Chocolate. I ate two on the day I was traveling to California for my vacation and it was JUST the thing I needed to hold me off until I finally got to my destination.

My favorite flavor was the Banana Oatmeal Dark Chocolate. I really liked the Peanut Butter one too but for some reason, the banana one just hit the spot more than the other one did. Bot were delicious. And at only about 170 calories they are a great gluten-free, Kosher, no-junk-included snack!

Skinnygirl is doing this cool promotion called “Skinnygirl Snack Swap”.

Throughout the month of September, Skinnygirl is encouraging women to swap out their snacks for more healthful options with the Skinnygirl Snack Swap campaign. The website is super cute and features a playful tool that asks people to choose their favorite snack and then personally picks healthier options to match that craving. Love it! Brilliant.

Since I’m a chocolate lover I went in and tried one of their recipes for a healthy snack swap… the Chocolate Mug Brownie Cake with Walnuts! Ummm, you know I LOVE mug cakes and this one is just fabulous… I omitted the walnuts though cause I just don’t care for nuts that much (except in nut butter form, hehe)

Chocolate Mug Brownie Cake with Walnuts

Ingredients

  • 2 egg whites
  • 1/4 cup canned pumpkin or unsweetened apple sauce
  • 2 Tbsp whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp water
  • 1 Tbsp semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 Tbsp chopped walnuts

Yield: 1 serving

  1. In a microwave-safe mug or boil, mix all ingredients except walnuts very well.
  2. Microwave mug cake for 2 – 2.5 minutes (note: microwave wattages and power levels vary; be careful as mug cakes can easily overcook)
  3. Carefully remove from microwave and top with walnuts.

Calories: 325, Protein 12g, Dietary Fiber 7g

 

Delicious :) And that’s only ONE of the recipes they have to offer… Definitely worth checking out.
