10 Goals for July & ABC of Happiness

First and foremost, I am ashamed to admit I’ve never been a huge goal maker. I know that writing goals down, and making them SMART is the key to success and to staying on track. I don’t know why I’ve never been much of a goal maker person when I already know how beneficial it can be. It holds you accountable and puts your mind in check. When you make distinct goals and write them down, you are most likely to achieve them by some large percent. I see it in study after study mentioned on various newsletters and health magazines I read. So why haven’t I been making SMART written goals for myself? I think I’m scared. Actually, yes, I am scared. I’m afraid of making it so official. I have no idea why, but I am pretty sure this feeling is fear. I have to get over it though. I’ve been making goals in my head, which aren’t necessarily specific enough, and I never end up achieving them. I forget about what the goal was. I don’t feel accountable and don’t feel pressured to achieve those goals. I’d make a goal to lose 5 lbs and never achieve it, until 3 months later I’m wondering “why have I only lost 2 lbs?” well lady, probably because you haven’t written your goals down and kept slipping up with the diet. Truth.

Since I’ve started making mental goals, I haven’t really done much to achieve them. I always tell myself to take it easy, that there’s no rush, but then I get in a slump and I feel bad for myself and feel depressive because I am still where I was and haven’t achieved any of the mental goals I have set for myself. I know it’s because I forget about them until it’s farther down the line and that’s why none of those goals can be mentally checked off yet still. So this month, I’m going to do it differently. And believe me when I say this — I am literally terrified of making these goals visible and written out. So official. Set in stone. I’m scared. I’m scared I will fail and feel horrible about myself. But this is what I need to do in order to continue moving forward. Although I have gone far in my healthy living journey, there is a lot of room for improvement, specifically in the portion control department and eating more balanced meals. I’ve been on a sugar rush (natural, mind you) and I think I’ve gotten a little addicted to sugar in the last few weeks. As you might have noticed from my WIAW posts, most of the foods I have been eating were sweet – full of fruit, yogurt, etc. I have a very minimal amount of added sugars however it’s still too many to be able to be considered healthy. I have to balance the sweetness out with more savory foods.

So that was a very long introduction to the main point of the post. I was influenced to write these by the way, because of Yellow Haired Girl, who has been setting goals for herself and I found it to be an awesome practice that I wanted to borrow. πŸ™‚ So thanks, girly! Β Here are my written out, SMART goals for the month of July:

  1. Weigh 125 lbs by the end of the month – that means I am setting myself for only a 3 lb weight loss for this month. I want to lose weight smart and I realize that since I do weight training, losing weight is more difficult and I am okay with that. Not looking for crazy fast weight loss. I have already lost 10 lbs since the beginning of the year (which isn’t much, I guess) but I want to make sure I weigh at least 125 lb by the end of July. My goal weight is 120 lb by the way.
  2. Eat only 2 meals a day (max) that are sweet, keep the rest savory.
  3. Have 1-2 servings of dairy a day, max.
  4. Going along with the point above, make a meal plan a week in advance and STICK to it.
  5. Make at least 10,000 steps every day and 10 floors every day (FitBit recorded)
  6. Do yoga once a week.
  7. Draw at least one picture every week.
  8. Do 3 creative/conceptual photo shoots.
  9. Learn more about Adobe Illustrator through the video tutorials I have.
  10. Read at least 3 books.

I think these are good starter goals. Yes, I have a lot of time on my hands since my internship is only on Tuesday through Thursday and I work weekend nights. I have nothing else to do with my time and I need more activities to I stop mindlessly eating out of boredom like I’ve been doing lately.

Another point of the post is the ABCs of happiness that many blogs I follow have been doing. I first saw it on Running Around NormalΒ (who kept it fitness and health related)Β and Meals & MovesΒ (whose was general about simple things). They got the idea from Abby who got the idea from Dorry. I am an idea borrower here too. Well, I love doing surveys and little quizzes and stuff like that, so of course I wanted to do it too πŸ™‚ Here’s my turn! Here are some simple ABCs of stuff that makes me happy.

  1. Goals are fun! But I don’t know how recent the tattoo picture is – if that’s what you look like now, you really don’t need to lose weight – you’re already really thin! And you have such a tiny waist! Also 120 is really low – I don’t know how tall you are, though, so I can’t say if it’s too low. All I’m trying to say is make sure that you don’t go overboard and that you do allow yourself some laxity and some rule breaking. Life’s too short and obsessions/EDs come on too fast!     • Thank you for reading! πŸ™‚ The lowest weight I’ve ever been at as an adult is 116, which was too low for me (not BMI wise but just overall, people said I looked better around 120-123 lbs) I’m only 5’4 too so it’s all within a healthy range. I am mostly focusing on losing fat though, I’d rather stay the weight I am now but have less fat on me than just making sure to hit that number on the scale. It’s a reference though. πŸ™‚ Have a great 4th of July!

  2. I love your tattoo, it’s gorgeous! I hope you reach your fitness goal! It’s very similar to mine, I’d much rather go by how I look and tone up rather than the number on the scale (but that of course I don’t want to be too high) Good luck!

  3. I tend to make goals (and even write them down!) and then forget about them/fail :/ But I never ever give myself a hard time about it. The way I see it, my goals are more of a to-do list, and if I don’t complete everything it’s still alright as long as I did my best. Don’t be too hard on yourself and make sure to enjoy each and every day! Happy 4th of July πŸ™‚
