When it comes to moving your butt, I hear a variety of limiting beliefs.
“I can’t lose weight walking”.
“I don’t have time”
“I’ve tried everything and I hate it all.”
Does this sound familiar?
We get stuck in ruts and tend to just do what everyone doing. We forget why we do anything in our lives. Life gets busy. We become zombies. It no longer is about how good it can feel to exercise, it changes into a chore. That one chore that you despise. And it never gets done.
In today’s post, I am going to share my top 5 tips for finding exercise that is fulfilling and fun.
1. Revisit your childhood.
Think about when you were a little kid. What activities did you love to do? Was it climbing trees? Playing soccer? How about riding your bike?
This week, take one form of exercise from your youth and bring it back.
Check in with yourself. Do you feel alive?
Are you excited to do it?
2. If you hate it, don’t bother doing it.
I don’t believe that exercise should be torture. If you do, then maybe you should take to a professional about that. The no pain, no gain mentality does not work for everyone.
How many times have you signed up for a fitness class or training only to bail at the last minute? Does it stress you out?
If so, don’t bother.
I am giving you permission to find something that lights you up.
3. Get those endorphins pumping.
It becomes enjoyable after you get started, right? That is because exercise causes your body to produce endorphins.
Those feel great hormones that kick in halfway through your work outs. You feel alive. Maybe even vibrant.
You could say slightly high?
There are so many benefits to moving your body on a regular basis and this is just one.
I dare you to start doing any form of physical activity for 10 minutes and if after those 10 minutes, you aren’t feeling great then move on to something else.
If you aren’t sure where to start, I would recommend walking.
4. Go to your bucket list.
I bet you have “the list”. All of the things you have been hoping to do. Anything from yoga to rock climbing. I used to think that I loved to do fitness classes, but really I loved the connection with my friends before and after the class.
I actually hated the classes.
So in my books, that was reason enough to find something else. I needed to be inspired, passionate and craving the activity to get my butt there.
Make a physical activity bucket list. Take 5 minutes and grab a piece of paper. Write it out. Everything you have every wanted to try. Don’t judge your list.
Just start somewhere.
Begin the trial and error process. Some items on your list, you will find that you will love and others you may dislike. However, it’s better to try it and make an educated decision than to not bother.
5. Got cravings?
This tip pairs with the bucket list above. In conversations, I often heard ” I would love to do that but….”.
Why haven’t you done it? What is holding you back? Why were you doing those other activities? What is your big why with wanting to incorporate more physical activity?
Our bodies are magnificent creatures.
We have responses and intuition build in from birth. Listen to what it is telling you. Do you need to move fast and aggressively (running or soccer)? Or do you feel a need to slow down and focus (yoga or Pilates)?
So step away from the computer and get moving!
