Different Types Of Dentistry To Know About In The USA

Are you one of those who believed in the magic of Tooth Fairy and kept the money in exchange for your teeth? If you are, then you should be a firm believer of dentists too! Dentists ensure our teeth are cavity-free so we can give megawatt smiles to everyone.

Dentistry has always been equated with tooth extractions and teeth cleaning, but there is so much more to dentistry. Let’s start with the basics with the different types of dentistry in the USA.

1. General Dentist

These are our well-loved family dentists who pay attention to our oral health on a regular basis. We go to them for check-ups, cleaning, and tooth extractions. They are also responsible for educating patients like us on how to properly take care of our teeth and mouth. While general dentists can treat almost anything teeth related, they refer patients to specialists should the need arises.

2. Orthodontist

These dentists are also famous because they are the ones who give us a million-dollar smile through braces. They install and maintain our braces until they are ready to be removed and have corrected the mistake they (the braces) were supposed to address. But being an orthodontist goes beyond just installing and removing braces, they are also concerned with aligning misaligned jawbones, teeth and other supporting facial features whether for functional or cosmetic reasons.

3. Periodontist

Periodontists focus on gums and preventing and treating different gum problems and concerns such as extreme gum inflammation and periodontal disease. Simply put, anything that requires extensive work on the gums is done by a periodontist.

 4. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

These surgeons are the ones responsible for performing reconstructive surgeries, cleft lip or cleft palate surgeries or facial infections. They are medically trained in hospitals and perform more intrusive operations than dental professionals usually handle.

Conclusion

The specializations mentioned above are what we call as the traditional dentists. Traditional dentists focus on treating teeth and gums when the need arises, and they focus on the area of concern. There are other types of dentists, called holistic dentists who focus on the individual’s body as a whole. These holistic dentists look for the underlying problems causing the symptoms and try to eradicate those problems by preventing any adverse effect on your health.

When it comes to treating patients, holistic dentists refrain from using materials such as silver mercury or amalgam fillings. This is because these materials may lead to a metallic taste in the mouth as well as mouth ulcers or other problems. They also prefer to use more natural remedies for mouth problems such as herbal medications.

Patients who are not fond of medicines prefer holistic dentists for this reason. If you are looking for a holistic dentist, visit this site for more information:https://holisticdentistryusa.com/. Dr. Thomas Lockensgard began his work in the early 1990s. And he believed that there is something amiss in the traditional dentistry which lead to his holistic dentistry career.
