There is no denying the fact that chocolate makes everything better. It tastes great and you can add it to pretty much about everything.
Heck, Mexican cuisine even uses cocoa powder to make meat dishes, which ends up tasting fantastic.
Now, working with chocolate can be a bit tricky, especially if you want to use real cocoa powder to make a hard chocolate coating on deserts. Luckily for you, we have a super simple and quick hard chocolate coating recipe that uses real cocoa powder.
Ingredients
Thankfully, the list of ingredients that are required for this hard chocolate shell coating is not very extensive. You really only need a few simple things that you will be able to find in any grocery store.
- 1 cup of coconut oil
- 1 cup cocoa powder
- ½ cup honey (can also use agave or maple syrup)
- 2 tablespoons pure vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon of salt
To explain why coconut oil is used here, for one, it is actually quite healthy. It contains various nutrients that are great for digestion and for human health in general.
Second, it will add a delicious flavor to the hard chocolate coating. Finally, coconut oil, when mixed with the other ingredients, will quickly harden when it cools down, thus making a hard coating.
Also, if you are not a fan of honey or maple syrup, you can make your own syrup, using water and sugar to create a thick sugar syrup.
Honey and maple syrup do have unique flavors, which is why we like using those. However, if you just need the sweetness, and want the coating to taste more like chocolate, a simple syrup will do just fine as well.
Directions
What is also thankful about this recipe is that it is very easy to make. You can make this hard chocolate coating in just a few steps and minutes.
- Combine the honey, coconut oil, and cocoa powder in a sauce pan.
- Heat up the mixture over medium-low heat in the sauce pan.
- Continue heating, while stirring constantly, until the ingredients are melted and combined.
- Add the vanilla and the salt to the mix.
- Stir and make sure that all ingredients are blended.
- Pour the molten mixture over the dessert of your choosing.
Some Side Notes
This is also a good recipe to go with because it is easy to multiply or divide the amount of ingredients depending on how much coating you want to make. Moreover, you can always store this product in an airtight container and reheat it for further use.
We do really love this cocoa based hard chocolate coating because it can be used for fruits, ice cream, cake, and pretty much everything in between.
Most of the ingredients used here are fairly healthy, which is of course an added bonus. It’s a quick and easy to make hard chocolate coating. And one that tastes delicious, too.
