What I’m reading lately… (December 2019)

December 20, 2019 By Kammie @ Sensual Appeal

what-im-reading

I’m a big book lover and I am always in the middle of at least one book. I’ve done several book reviews in the past but I realized I haven’t been doing that in a while and I haven’t even updated you with what I’m reading lately.

I think the last book I mentioned I read was Grain Brain which was a good book and I did a recap of my 4 week challenge as well. It talks about the dangers of gluten from a neurological perspective. I haven’t read Wheat Belly so this was a totally new thing to me – it was very insightful and interesting. I even let my friend borrow it because I really think it’s something that everyone should know – whether they decide to adopt the lifestyle or not (I didn’t fully but I definitely have a different perspective on gluten now and try to limit it when possible)

I thought I’d talk about some books I’m currently reading and the books I have on my list to read as soon as I’m done with the current ones.

Just finished reading:

51Yq0hL1NEL._SY344_PJlook-inside-v2,TopRight,1,0_SH20_BO1,204,203,200_Daring Greatly by Brene Brown. Oh man. I’ve had a lot of people recommend Brene to me and I am so glad I listened. This book hit home. I saw her TED talk about vulnerability and shame and I could totally relate and therefore couldn’t wait to read this book. It is seriously full of insights that I had no idea existed. I think everyone should read this book.

Currently reading:

41H398NYsbL._SY344_PJlook-inside-v2,TopRight,1,0_SH20_BO1,204,203,200_The Power Of Now by Eckhart Tolle. This is a book about spiritual enlightenment. I stopped after the first or second chapter because I felt that I wasn’t well-versed in spiritial enlightenment yet and the approach this book takes is for someone who is at least a little bit more familiar with the basics. It’s more of a Q&A type of book and I just felt like it wasn’t right for me since I’m SO new to this. I’m putting it aside to finish reading once I’m done and more comfortable with the topic.

41FKhggoR0L._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA300_SH20_OU01_The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer. I like this book. It’s another spiritual enlightenment book but I like this approach but better because it feels a lot more organized and is VERY insightful… I get super engrossed in it every time I read it. I read it on my 15 min train ride to work and every time I forget where I am because it is just so well-written and interesting. Like I said, I’m still not entirely on board with this whole thing but it is very interesting and I want to be more on board with it. I’m sure once I read the whole book (And maybe read it once more) I’ll have a better understanding of it and be able to formulate my own opinion and pathway. But so far… it’s amazing and I certainly recommend it. It will help you discover yourself.

518A4QPWA6L._SY344_PJlook-inside-v2,TopRight,1,0_SH20_BO1,204,203,200_The Pleasure Zone by Stella Resnick. The subtitle to this book is ‘Why We Resist Good Feelings & How to Let Go and Be Happy’. I knew I haven’t had much pleasure in my life and going along with the shame principle I know I’ve been resistant to it. This book puts a lot of Brene’s work into play and takes on it with a pleasure spin. It’s VERY good as well. I stopped about half way through cause I got distracted with the spiritual enlightenment books but I am planning on finishing it as soon as I’m done with The Untethered Soul.

41BIWR6UTwL._SY344_PJlook-inside-v2,TopRight,1,0_SH20_BO1,204,203,200_Losing it by Cora Carmack. The only novel in the bunch, haha. This book is awesome so far. I’m only about 1/4 of the way in but it’s really fun and light-hearted and very relatable. It’s about a girl who’s a virgin at 22 years old and almost loses it in a one night stand but ends up not doing it. And the guy ends up being her new professor. It’s a funny book. I like it. Definitely typical chick lit 😉

More reading:

This is a legit to-read list and I have these book sitting here ready to be read. So this isn’t just speculation, this one is for real. Haha. Okay so in my list I’ve got…

41Ea1xrHgLL._SX258_BO1,204,203,200_The Desire Map by Danielle LaPorte. I saw her interview about her book and I liked her idea behind goal planning. I have already mapped out a bunch of goals for 2014 but I am curious about her idea of core pleasures and feelings and I think that is very closely related to my spiritual enlightenment reading I’ve been doing so I’m looking forward to reading this book.

41vMIglMJeL._SY344_PJlook-inside-v2,TopRight,1,0_SH20_BO1,204,203,200_Carry On, Warrior: Thoughts on Life Unarmed by Glennon Melton. I ordered this book after reading some great posts by the author on her blog Momastery. Truth be told, I don’t even know what this book is about – or maybe I just don’t remember. But I’m looking forward to reading more of her writing.

514IYPfa5YL._SY344_PJlook-inside-v2,TopRight,1,0_SH20_BO1,204,203,200_The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown. In her book, Daring Greatly, she mentions this previous book numerous times and I’m excited to read this as a way to continue my knowledge and ways to deal with shame and vulnerability. Can you tell I’ ready to come to terms with myself and get into self-love? 😉

519oINIdr5L._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA278_PIkin4,BottomRight,-70,22_AA300_SH20_OU01_From Coping to Thriving: How to Turn Self-care into a Way of Life by Hannah Braime. I don’t even know what this is about yet. I bought it on a spurt of Kindle buying books about self-love. I’ll get to it.

41XIKA9KD9L._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA278_PIkin4,BottomRight,-67,22_AA300_SH20_OU01_The Emotional Eating Rescue Plan for Smart, Busy Women: Make Peace with Food, Live the Life You Hunger For by Melissa McCreery. Man, good call – I haven’t started this yet too and I’m gonna do that soon. Someone (a blogger I think) was advertising it (or maybe she wrote it? I Don’t remember) and it sounded promising so I bought it during my Kindle spurt, haha.

41hbd4rFWcL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA278_PIkin4,BottomRight,-67,22_AA300_SH20_OU01_ (1)Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar by Cheryl Strayed. I also don’t remember what this is about but it is sitting and patiently waiting to be read in my iPad Kindle app.

512RyCaVdjL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA278_PIkin4,BottomRight,-63,22_AA300_SH20_OU01_My Big Bottom Blessing by Teasi Cannon. Another one that was a spurt of the moment but this is for sure about self-love and accepting who you are and how you look like so it could be interesting.

Questions for you:

  • What books are you currently reading?
  • Have you read any of these books?
  • Do you go on Kindle buying spurs too?

Let me know in the comments!
